Accounting principles</span> <br/> These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards, International Accounting Standards and interpretations (collectively IFRS) issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) as adopted by the European Union ( adopted IFRSs ). In the current year the Group has adopted all of the new and revised standards and interpretations issued by the IASB and the International Financial Reporting Interpretations Committee (IFRIC) of the IASB, as they have been adopted by the European Union, that are relevant to its operations and effective for accounting periods beginning on 1 January 2009. <br/><br/> <span class="greytext">Changes in accounting policies</span> <br/> The adoption of the following new and revised standards and interpretations has not resulted in any significant changes to the Group s accounting policies nor have they had a material effect on the amounts reported for the current or prior years. <br/><br/> IFRS 8, Operating Segments (effective for accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2009). This standard sets out requirements for the disclosure of information about the group s operating segments and also about the group s products and services, the geographical areas in which it operates, and its major customers, based on the information reviewed by the  chief operating decision maker . As this is a disclosure standard it has had no impact on the results or net assets of the Group. <br/><br/> Amendments to IAS 1 Presentation of Financial Statements: A Revised Presentation. The revised Standard has introduced a number of terminology changes and has resulted in a number of changes in presentation and disclosure. As a result of the application of this Amendment the Group has elected to present a single statement of comprehensive income. However, the revised Standard has had no impact on the reported results or financial position of the Group. <br/><br/> Improving Disclosures about Financial Instruments (Amendments to IFRS 7). The application of this Amendment has resulted in changes to the disclosures provided in respect of financial instruments, primarily in <a href="financialstatements26.htm">note 26</a> to the financial statements including an analysis of financial asset and financial liability that is measured at fair value in the statement of financial position, into a three level fair value measurement hierarchy.
